Cottages of Fox Lake - Assisted Living and Memory Care - Best of Senior Living - A Place For Mom

{When faced with such a daunting decision about where to place your loved one, I agonized over the poor quality of some of the homes I visited. At the last minute, my husband looked up The Cottages of Fox Lake because it so nearby. I can't tell you enough what a great decision it was. I received a callback literally within minutes, went to visit and signed all the papers. My sister is not just living there, she's thriving! The residents are always engaged in music, games, reading the daily news, taking walks, going on field trips and they are free to express their individual personalities. This place is clean, and the residents are known by name. It's a small group setting so friendships are made easily. I love this place and all the people who lovingly help the residents.{

{Since I work, I had hoped to find a memory care residence for my mom that was close to work and home. I toured a few, and decided to place mom at The Cottages, which is very close to both! The management now is superb, and I couldn't be happier! EVERYONE is on board providing excellent care, communication with families, and there is an abundance of activities and adventures for ALL of the residents; mom is thriving! Amber you are a God given gift to all. You plan and lead activities with the greatest of love and passion for each resident. I know, because I join in! Residents are out and about participating; not stuck in their rooms. The campus is beautiful and intimate, providing a lovely nature-like landscape for sitting, walking, and outdoor events. The new Alzheimer's/ Dementia Support Group for families to relate, share, and connect is a wonderful addition! With the many family inclusive events, as well as resident outings, I always look forward to attending all that I can!{

{If there was a most-improved award in the care industry for adults with dementia, this place should get it. Charter's team has come in and increased staffing and the people they've brought in work together in special ways. Their flexibility and focus on the residents is top drawer. A gerontologist comes by regularly to check on residents and the care staff actively seeks out special advice on the wants and needs of their charges. They truly listen and develop plans for their residents around those preferences. Hospice is a welcome addition to daily care and the course of care from outside medical help is both welcome and adhered to. The care team works together really well, and they adapt well to anything special that comes up. Teamwork is a noteworthy strength. That comes from positive, focused leadership and caregivers' connection. Cottages' arrangement in four different buildings gives residents a cozy environment with about 14 housemates to get to know. It creates ... a family.{

{My mom has been at this facility for over two years. I know that she always has someone to help her when she needs it. I also know she is safe. All the care she receives at The Cottages is top notch. I am pleasantly surprised when I visit and I see mom has painted, participated in something new for her, or even gotten her nails done. The staff really cares about the residents and there’s even an on-site super chef that loves his job. Finding a care facility can be difficult but I know I’ll never look elsewhere for my mom to be happy and safe in her final years.{

{My mom has been at The Cottages for 2 Years., she has been in assisted then memory care for 5 years. I looked at 3 other facilities before choosing The Cottages, I moved her from a facility in Libertyville to keep her closer to me. I visit 2 to 4 times a week, all different times of the day and night. The Cottages is always consistently carrying for their residents with so much compassion. There is often family events and coping groups for the families. Daily activities for the residents to join, always clean, decorated for the season and holidays. The caregivers know the habits, likes, friendships, and preferences of the residents in each cottage and form bonds with each. With the residents living in small Cottages vs. Larger community buildings it creates a tighter family environment. I will always recommend The Cottages.{

{What is the single most challenging issue today for memory care? Hiring. Cottages of Fox Lake has cracked the code. I moved my wife in at the beginning of 2024. This is not the same Cottages of Fox Lake that I interviewed in late 2022. The Executive Director has done an extraordinary job of finding the right permanent hire people for the right roles and retaining the best of them. The result is a team that works very well together to help people with extreme challenges to live their best lives. My wife is doing better now, half a year later, than when she moved in, despite having an advanced, progressive condition. That isn't an accident, and it's all about the team. The same gerontologist makes regular visits to the facility and all permanent staff gives a continuity of care and friendship you can't get by primarily using temporary workers. Cottages has the flexibility to bring in temps if needed, I suppose, but I can't remember the last time I met one, and I am there daily. Staff connected her with a physical therapy company appropriate for her medical insurance to work on her mobility. Cottages Staff got to know my wife and always listen carefully as I relay what I've learned over ten years of managing her condition at home. The facility layout also helps quite a bit. Instead of many people in one building, the four-building approach keeps people who need similar care approaches together, and there are less people in each building to care for. My wife has about 15 housemates, and they're good to each other. You won't find better care, particularly not at the price. I interviewed ten facilities in the area to find that out. They have two spaces left in memory care as of last week, the end of May 2024, and five spaces in Assisted Living. My best advice if you've found that your loved one needs more help than you can give is to talk to Cottages to work out a plan to move them in.{

{After providing in-home care for Mom for almost 4 years, we needed to make a decision and look for a facility that provided memory care. After much research, we decided to bring her to The Cottages of Fox Lake. We moved her into the memory care cottage at the start of the pandemic, where the staff has kept her safe during these trying times. They have made her feel at home and keep her engaged with in-house activities and socializing in an intimate home setting. We are extremely satisfied with the family atmosphere, the kind and helpful staff, and overall piece of mind we have gotten from knowing she is being well cared for. Thank you to the excellent staff and residents of The Cottages of Fox Lake!{

{While all assisted living places are going through staffing changes and challenges, the Cottages are working through them. So very thankful for staff attending to my mom as soon as she had her stroke. EMTs were there and evaluated her and got her to the hospital so that effects were reversed. Timeliness is everything. Thank you staff!!{

{I have been researching facilities for my mom for about the last 6 to 12 months when I stumbled upon this gem. The Cottages of Fox Lake is a bit tucked away but surpassed my initial expectations in every way. From the care staff to the newer Executive Director Jennifer to the nice lady who checked us in - I can’t remember her name to meeting Shelli who has the patience of a Saint helping us to understand the process prior to moving in as well as what happens after moving in, every person we encountered stopped to welcome my wife and me and made us feel like family. We were in a hurry and had to go, so imagine our surprise when Shelli presented us with two lunches to go (and it was really good). If my mom doesn’t move to California with my sister, she will soon be calling the Cottages of Fox Lake home. If you are looking for a facility for either yourself or someone else, cut out a lot of wasted time and go see Shelli. You will love this facility.{
